In this prison that he is stuck in they emphasis and keep the prisoners as isolated from other prisoners as possible, but Rubashov manages to find a way to communicate with another prisoner. The two prisoners talk back and forth through tapping the alphabet on pipes within their cells. This is about the time when Rubashov has another flashback of his foreign missions to assist Germany, where the USSR communist were falling apart.
